Productivity and sustainability go hand in hand

Productivity and sustainability go hand in hand

June 30 2026

Productivity and sustainability are often framed as competing priorities, yet practical examples from Australian agriculture continue to demonstrate that the two can be achieved together. A recent case study from a South Australian sheep and cattle enterprise highlights how data-informed decision-making can deliver benefits for both business performance and environmental outcomes.

Working with advisers from Pinion Advisory, the enterprise assessed the impact of adjusting stocking rates to better align with seasonal conditions and available feed resources. The analysis found that reducing stocking pressure from 18 DSE/ha to 15 DSE/ha resulted in a significant reduction in net farm emissions, while also improving overall profitability.

The results were compelling. Net farm emissions fell by more than 2,000 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent, while net income increased by over $400,000. The case study demonstrates that sustainability outcomes and business performance do not need to be viewed as trade-offs. Instead, careful management decisions, supported by data and analysis, can help deliver improvements across multiple areas of farm performance.

Importantly, the findings reinforce the value of measuring and understanding key sustainability indicators. By monitoring factors such as emissions, productivity and resource use, producers can make more informed decisions that support long-term resilience and continuous improvement.

As markets, governments and consumers increasingly seek evidence of sustainable production systems, practical examples such as this provide valuable insights into how Australian livestock enterprises are responding. They also highlight the important role that data plays in helping producers identify opportunities, manage risk and strengthen the sustainability credentials of their businesses.

The case study serves as a reminder that sustainability is not a single practice or outcome. Rather, it is an ongoing process of informed decision-making that balances environmental, social and economic considerations to support the long-term viability of agricultural enterprises.
